Is the Towson Chamber of Commerce playing favorites in the Fifth County Council district? You might draw that conclusion by looking at its upcoming “Fifth District County Council Candidates Forum,” which will be held on February 4--more than five months before the filing deadline, and featuring only two Democrat candidates.
The Fifth District stretches from Towson to Perry Hall. It is, by far, the most competitive of the County Council districts. Seven of its 12 state legislators are Republican, and before the election of Vince Gardina, Towson was represented for 12 years by Republicans on the County Council. This year, there is a decent shot it will elect a Republican. Unfortunately, though, the Towson Chamber of Commerce has decided to hold a candidates forum before the Republican candidate (or candidates) announce, and a full five months before the filing deadline.
Is it any coincidence that the wife of Gordon Harden, the Democrat candidate backed by development interests, is on the Chamber Board?
Hopefully, the Towson Chamber of Commerce will hold a nonpartisan candidates forum once all candidates announce. Towson deserves to hear from all candidates once the filing deadline has closed.
