Reform Baltimore County Blog

For much of its recent history, Baltimore County has enjoyed an enviable quality of life. Today, however, there is a growing sense of frustration with the county’s direction. Communities are dealing with overcrowded schools, aging infrastructure, and steady deterioration in many of our business areas and neighborhoods. Many residents, particularly senior citizens, are struggling to pay their property taxes. They feel abandoned by the Democrats who run Baltimore County—leaders who seem to care more about their lucrative pensions and political advancement than dealing with the concerns of working-class families. It's time for a new direction in Baltimore County.

Baltimore County Republican Party Chairman Chris Cavey sent out a press release that voiced what tens of thousands of Baltimore Countians are probably wondering this week...couldn't the county be doing a better job with its response to this historic snowstorm?

Is the Towson Chamber of Commerce Playing Favorites?

Is the Towson Chamber of Commerce playing favorites in the Fifth County Council district? You might draw that conclusion by looking at its upcoming “Fifth District County Council Candidates Forum,” which will be held on February 4--more than five months before the filing deadline, and featuring only two Democrat candidates.

"This Council Blew an Opportunity to Make Constructive Substantial Changes in the Pension System."

Those aren't words from a Republican. It's a quote from Democrat County Councilman Joseph Bartenfelder, remarking on the Baltimore County Council's passage of a weaker pension "reform" bill. The bill still allows longtime County Councilmembers, such as Democrat Vince Gardina, to walk away with hefty sweetheart pensions that are way beyond those of police officers, firefighters, and other county employees.

Smith Uses Mailing to Promote Self, Not Necessarily Recycling

Have you gotten your recycling postcard?

The one side features a couple dumping items into their recycling bins. The other side features a few--and we emphasize a few--details about the county's new recycling policy...but that side is dominated by a big photo of County Executive Jim Smith and a message from Smith that amounts to a pep talk on solid waste management.

"A Right Turn for County?" Richard Cross's Commentary in the Baltimore Sun

Maryland political commentator Richard Cross has an excellent piece in the Baltimore Sun about how Baltimore County might be fertile ground for a Republican resurgence in 2010:

Democrat Misdeeds Dominate Top Baltimore County Political Stories

Democrat misdeeds dominated the top five political stories of 2009 in Baltimore County, as picked by Patuxent Publishing newspapers.

The top political story was the effort by Democrat developer lawyers, including the County Executive's son, to handpick members of the Baltimore County Council. Most noteworthy was how Bryan Sears, political editor for Patuxent Publishing, described the three Democrats annointed by these developer lawyers: they are "unknown and untested" (in other words, people the developers can control).
